Shayyala is a group of dancers who draw on the tradition of the Dabka, a traditional group dance from the Levant (including Palestine, Lebanon and Syria) and other Arab countries. It is a space where memory, rhythm and presence can continue to live on, be transformed in the present and become an expression of resistance.
This is our first step: a young group, on a journey, taking its first steps together.
The project is the brainchild of Layal Chamas, a dancer and performer who was previously a member of the Hayakel Baalbek troupe in Lebanon. Her artistic journey began with artistic gymnastics and was further enriched by her training in dance theater and folk dance.
